Do you ever find yourself wondering: Is this my thinking mind? My logical mind? My anxiety? Or is this my intuition?
How can I tell the difference?
Which one should I trust?
If these questions sound familiar, you’re in the right place. Today, we’re going to explore how intuition and thinking are not enemies but rather the best of friends—and how you can learn to tell the difference between the two.
If you constantly find yourself wondering, “Is this my intuition or am I just overthinking?” then you might be a member of what I call the “Woulda Shoulda Coulda Club.”
This club is filled with people who receive intuitive nudges, whispers, or “hits” from the universe but, as soon as they do, they immediately question: “Is this really my intuition? Can I trust it? What if I’m wrong?” And, in that moment, they miss the guidance.
But why does this happen? Why can’t we just trust our intuition? And how do we know the difference?
We live in a world that craves information, and we’re conditioned to search for the “right” answer. But the thing about intuition is—it doesn’t work in terms of “right” and “wrong.” Instead, it operates on vibration and guides you to what is true for you in the present moment.
When we break free from the mindset of right versus wrong, good versus bad, we move away from patriarchal paradigms and start to reconnect with our own inner truth. This inner truth comes from our intuition, that innate divine spark within us that helps us trust what’s true for us and guides us to make decisions from a place of authenticity.
Thinking and intuition actually work together—they’re not opposites, even though society often presents them as such. We’re taught that if we’re “thinking“ people, then there’s no room for intuition. But the truth is, our rational thinking mind plays a crucial role in helping us organize the world around us.
Your thinking mind is linear, methodical—it’s the part of you that helps you process information step by step, using A, B, and C. It doesn’t access creativity or imagination, but it’s a great organizer. Your intellect helps you reason and critically think, asking, “Is this true?“ And if something doesn’t resonate as true, it opens you up to your intuitive guidance.
While the intellect is like a window into a limited scope of information, intuition is your access to cosmic consciousness. It’s that part of you that is deeply connected to the universe’s infinite wisdom. Imagine your intuition as your little bay on the ocean of divine consciousness. It’s constantly receiving guidance that is aligned with what is true for you in each moment.
Intuition doesn’t work in the way your thinking mind does. It doesn’t speak in words or logic. Instead, it speaks in vibration, symbols, and images. It guides you step by step in the present moment, providing insights and solutions that your thinking mind might overlook. But here’s the magic—your thinking mind and intuition work best when they work together.
Intuition thrives when there’s a clear destination. Your thinking mind can set the goal—“This is what I want”—and your intuition will help guide you step by step toward that goal. They are best friends, not rivals.
The issue arises when we get caught in overthinking. When your thinking mind becomes too fixated on finding the “right“ answer, it can lead to overwhelm and indecision. Have you ever been in the situation where you’ve researched a decision to death, like reading every Yelp review for a taco place, only to still feel unsure? This is your thinking mind at work, believing that more information will lead to a perfect choice. But intuition doesn’t operate like that.
So how can you tell if you’re overthinking? Overthinking is filled with “shoulds,” “musts,“ and “have tos.“ Your thinking mind is constantly looking for more information, trying to solve problems from a place of logic and reason. It might even lead you into analysis paralysis, where the more you think, the more stuck you feel.
For example, let’s say you’re trying to choose a taco place. Your thinking mind will gather every review and compare every factor—ratings, reviews, locations—and still leave you unsure. But when you open yourself up to intuition, that’s when your inner guidance kicks in. Intuition won’t bombard you with facts or analysis; it will simply say, “This is the one.“ It’s a feeling, a knowing that resonates in your body.
When You’re Overthinking vs. Your Intuition
Thinking Mind:
- Black-and-white, right-and-wrong, good-and-bad
- Always looking for more information
- Speaks in shoulds and musts
- Obsessed with finding the “right“ answer
Intuition:
- Resides in the present moment
- Speaks in vibrations, images, and feelings
- Creative and solutions-oriented
- Resonates deeply as true
- Guides you toward your highest good
It’s easy to get caught up in how things appear on the surface, but intuition helps you see beyond appearances. When you learn to quiet your thinking mind and listen to the subtle whispers of your intuition, you open yourself up to deeper wisdom.
So, next time you wonder, “Is this my intuition or my thinking mind?“ remember: thinking and intuition are not enemies. They’re two sides of the same coin, each serving a purpose. By learning to trust your intuition, you allow it to guide you in partnership with your thinking mind—both working together to lead you to your highest good.
