Have you been developing your intuition, learning to work with oracle cards, tarot decks, and everything in between and now want to start doing readings for other people?
Maybe you’ve spent time and energy learning different tools and practicing readings for yourself. Now, you’re ready to share your gift with the world.
But you’re thinking, I don’t even know how.
The good news is that intuitive readings don’t have to feel complicated. In this article, I’m going to share some simple steps for creating the sacred space to do readings and explain the process I’ve been using for a long, long time.
Having a structure and framework to work within allows your ego and intellect to relax. This creates space for you to receive clear guidance, trust your intuition, and share what you receive in a meaningful way.
Hi, I’m Sonia. I’m a fourth-generation intuitive, and I’m here to teach you how to use your intuition.
I was trained by my mom, Sonia Choquette, and I’ve used this same process to teach and mentor others in developing their intuitive abilities. Now, I’m excited to share it with you.
Define Your Sacred Space
First and foremost, define your sacred space.
Now, whether you have a meditative space or share a space, it can be anywhere. But where is your container to create?
For me, I have a reading area. This is where I work, and it is my sacred space.
Wherever you have a sacred space, and this can even be a place that you practice, have it be consistent.
Because what happens is that, when we create rituals, our space becomes a portal. This is why altars are so important, and this is why meditative practices are so important, your spiritual practices, your zen spot.
The more that we use our time, attention, and energy in that space, the energy collects and grows.
And you can feel this anytime that you walk into a sacred space, whether it’s a church or a mosque or a cemetery or a synagogue or anything. You feel it. You feel the reverence. You feel the weight, whether that’s what you ascribe to or not.
So when you create that space in your home, that place where you connect with your intuition, whether it’s oracle cards or anything, with intention, that becomes a bridge.
So define your space. Even if you’re sharing space and it’s in your bed, that’s fine. Just have the intention: I am now using this as my sacred space.
Get Clear on Your Intention
Second, pay attention to your intention and really get clear.
Why do you want to do readings? Why do you want to do this work?
The reason I ask is because there’s something important about doing readings: we are here to be of service.
You are a messenger.
One of the biggest lessons my mom taught me was simple: mind your business.
Because the truth is, people often come for readings after they’ve already tried many different ways to understand what’s going on in their lives. They’re coming to you to help them see clearly what they may be missing.
That means we can’t bring our ego into the reading. We can’t make it about ourselves, and we can’t become attached to what the person thinks, feels, or does with the information we share.
And that’s a big practice.
I remember after doing one of my very first readings as a kid, the first thing I wanted to ask was, “How was it? Did you like it? Did it make sense? Was this okay for you?”
But suddenly, the reading became about me.
Without realizing it, I was asking the person I had just read to take care of my need for approval.
That’s not our job.
So, first, know your mission. Know your purpose. Remember that you are there to be of service. When you understand that, it becomes much easier to get your ego out of the way.
You don’t need approval. You don’t need reassurance. And you don’t need to follow up afterward asking, “Did you like the reading?”
Your job is to deliver the message with clarity, compassion, and trust and then let it go.
Don’t Read for People Unless They Ask
Third. And this is another big ethical principle: don’t read for people unless they ask.
This is a giant red flag for me.
If somebody says, “Hey, you know, my guides have a message for you?”
No. No.
Because when you offer someone a reading they didn’t ask for, you’re not trusting their own authority. You’re interfering.
It’s not your place to step into someone else’s stuff or assume that you know what they need to hear.
So again, don’t solicit readings by saying, “Oh, I have something for you.”
That’s a no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
If someone wants a reading, let them ask for one. Honor their choice, their timing, and their own authority.
Create Rituals to Open the Space
Now that we’ve gotten some of the basics out of the way, the first thing we do is create our space.
Create your space.
One of the really valuable things that happens when we develop a practice around readings is that we’re training ourselves to get our heads out of the way.
When we create rituals, they help cue the physical body to open up to guidance.
Think about something as simple as drinking coffee in the morning. The moment you smell that coffee, your brain knows, Okay, it’s time to wake up. You’ve created a ritual that signals the beginning of your day.
We can do the same thing with intuitive readings.
Create a ritual for opening the energetic space and another for closing it.
For me, I might light incense or a candle. Sometimes I’ll ring a bell. I have a bunch of different things that I can pull from.
You don’t need to do all of these things. Pick one and make it your opener and your closer.
For example, you might light a candle and use that moment to consciously open both the physical and energetic space for your reading.
And when the reading is complete, you’ll have another moment or ritual to close the space.
The ritual itself doesn’t have to be complicated. What matters is that you create a consistent signal for yourself: now I’m opening the space, and now I’m closing it.
Organize Your Time and Create a Framework
Next, we want to organize our time.
Your client may be joining you in person, over the phone, or virtually. However you’re working together, the first thing you want to do is get organized.
This is where we can use the power of our intellect to create structure.
Your client arrives. You’ve opened your space, connected, and perhaps taken some time to meditate and quietly drop in.
Now, welcome your client.
“Hello, how are you doing?”
For me, I like to begin by having the client take a few deep breaths. You might simply say, “Just take a breath.”
This helps bring them into the present moment and allows them to settle into the energy of the reading. It also gives both of you a moment to connect and become fully present.
Now that we’ve opened the energetic space, we can use our intellect to organize the experience.
Tell your client what the structure will be.
For example, if you’re doing an oracle card reading, explain how the reading will unfold:
“First, we’re going to look at this. Then we’ll look at this. Then we’ll explore this, and at the end, we’ll have time for any questions.”
Having a framework is important because it tells your client what to expect. It allows them to relax because they know what’s coming next.
And that can be especially helpful because readings can feel vulnerable or even scary. A client may be nervous about what kind of guidance is going to come through.
When you give them grounded information and a clear structure from the beginning, you create a greater sense of safety and trust.
They can relax, open, and soften into the experience.
Then you can begin your reading.
Practice the Pause
And the last thing I want to talk about is practicing the pause.
When I first started doing readings, I would go really, really fast, trying to give out as much information as I possibly could.
And it rushed me.
What I realize now is that there was a small, protected part of me that wanted to rush. It was pulling me away from the present moment and away from truly connecting.
It was really just unconscious anxiety.
So if you’re feeling anxious or nervous during a reading, take a breath.
Go slow.
Trust that all of the tools and practices you’ve been using to develop your relationship with your intuition are there for you.
You can remind yourself:
I’m open to my guides. I expect guidance. I trust that the practices I’ve been doing have prepared me to receive it.
You don’t have to force it. You don’t have to worry about where the next piece of guidance is going to come from. You can slow down and allow yourself to connect.
Listen. Feel. Notice the energy.
When I was a kid starting out, I was afraid that if I paused or took too long, my client would think I didn’t know what I was doing.
But that was my own projection.
The truth is, a pause doesn’t mean you don’t know what you’re doing.
Being able to pause, slow down, feel, and listen is where we can truly connect—with ourselves, our guides, our intuition, the divine, and the person sitting in front of us.
So don’t be afraid of the silence.
Let the pause be part of the reading.
Don’t Miss the Person in Front of You
Most importantly, remember that your client, whether they’re sitting right in front of you, on the phone, or joining you virtually, is a magnificent, beautiful spirit.
Don’t miss the person in front of you.
Don’t get so focused on trying to get the reading “right” that you lose sight of the person you’re there to serve.
Practice the pause. Take a breath. Come back to the present moment. Drop in and connect with the energy and presence of the person in front of you.
That’s where the real connection happens.
Close the Energetic Space
And finally, when you’re done, close the energetic space.
You can do this with your client by simply acknowledging that the reading has come to an end:
“Thank you. That concludes our time together.”
If you offer follow-up support, you can let them know what that looks like. Then say goodbye, thank them, and close the space.
This is where your closing ritual comes in.
For example, you might blow out your candle. That simple action becomes a marker for your body that the reading is complete.
Leave the energy behind.
You did your part. You were of service. You showed up and did the best you could.
And that’s enough.
Don’t sit afterward and ruminate:
How was my reading? Did I do it right? What did they think?
Nope.
Let it go.
You can even create a simple ritual for releasing any energy that doesn’t belong to you. At the end of my day, I might tune into my body and ask, Is any of this energy mine?
If something doesn’t feel like mine to carry, I can simply acknowledge it and release it:
“I give back what isn’t mine. Thank you. It’s not mine to carry.”
Cut the cord.
And then be proud of yourself.
Celebrate.
You did it.
The first reading is always the hardest. With practice, it gets easier and easier. You become more confident, have more fun, and experience more clarity and joy.
Find Your Own Style
Remember, this is just one structure.
There are so many different ways to do intuitive readings.
Try out some of these tools and see what works for you.
Take what works. Leave what doesn’t.
Find your style, your voice, and your own way of doing it.
What I do know is that having a framework (whatever that looks like for you) is key to setting both yourself and your client up for success.
When you have a structure to work within, you know what you’re working with and what you’re moving
